Frequently Asked Questions
Epoxy Flooring Questions
How much does it cost to epoxy 1,000 square feet?
At HomeGuide's national range of $4 to $10 per square foot installed, 1,000 square feet comes to about $4,000 to $10,000 for epoxy. Polyaspartic runs $5 to $12 per square foot on HomeGuide, or about $5,000 to $12,000. Heavy prep, such as grinding off an old coating or repairing salt scaling, can push a Green Bay floor toward the top of that range.
How much does a 12x12 epoxy floor cost?
A 12x12 floor is 144 square feet. At $4 to $10 per square foot, that is roughly $576 to $1,440. Small floors often cost more per square foot, because setup, grinding and travel take nearly as long as they do on a larger room.
What is the downside of epoxy flooring?
HomeGuide lists hard application, long cure times and brittleness in extreme temperatures. Standard epoxy can also yellow in sunlight and gets slippery when wet if it is left glossy and smooth. Good prep, a UV-stable topcoat and added texture handle most of these.
Is it expensive to epoxy your floor?
HomeAdvisor puts the average garage coating job at about $2,526, with most falling between $1,650 and $3,494. Store kits cost far less, about $200 to $700 per HomeGuide, but they usually depend on acid etching and thin coats. On a slab that takes Wisconsin road salt every winter, that is often the one that has to be redone.
Can you install an epoxy floor in a Green Bay winter?
Yes, with care. Epoxy needs a warm slab to cure, and HomeGuide gives 60°F to 85°F as its application range. In cold months we heat the space, check the slab temperature, and often use polyaspartic, which has a much wider temperature window. If we cannot get conditions right, we pick another date.
Does an epoxy floor coating work on a lakeshore garage in Kewaunee or Algoma?
Yes, with the same prep we use in Green Bay. The Lake Michigan towns share the humid air and the salted roads, so we test the slab for moisture, grind it, and use a chemical-resistant topcoat with texture. A detached garage near the water can stay cold and damp into spring, so we check slab temperature before scheduling.
How long does a coated garage floor last?
HomeGuide says water-based epoxy may last 3 to 5 years, while solid epoxy and polyaspartic systems last 10 to 20 years or more. In a snowbelt garage, the prep, the thickness of the system and how often you rinse salt off the floor make the biggest difference.
Will my coated floor be slick when it is wet with snowmelt?
A smooth, glossy finish can be. Flake floors have built-in texture, and we can mix an anti-slip aggregate into the topcoat on solid-color floors. Most garage customers here choose one or the other.
Garage Floor Epoxy Questions
How much does garage floor epoxy cost in Green Bay?
HomeGuide's national range for a two-car garage is about $1,600 to $5,800 for epoxy. Salt scaling, an old coating to strip and the finish you pick all change where your floor lands. We give you a written number after we see it.
How long before I can park on a new epoxy garage floor?
Bob Vila's coating guide says standard epoxy usually needs about three days before vehicles, while polyaspartic can take cars after about 24 hours. Cold weather slows curing, so we give you a specific time for your floor.
Why did my DIY garage epoxy peel?
Usually the prep. Kits depend on acid etching, which leaves weak or salt-contaminated concrete and old sealers in place. Hot tires then lift the thin coating. A ground surface and a thicker system bond far better.
Is garage floor epoxy worth it in Wisconsin?
For a garage that takes road salt every winter, a bonded coating protects the concrete and makes cleanup simple. It is not worth doing over a slab with active water or heaving, and we tell you if that is what we find.
Can you coat a detached garage with no heat?
Yes, in the right season, or with temporary heat in colder months. Epoxy needs a warm slab to cure, so for unheated garages we often schedule late spring through early fall or use a polyaspartic topcoat.
Full-Flake Epoxy Floors Questions
Are flake floors slippery when wet?
Less than a smooth gloss floor, because the flakes add texture under the topcoat. For extra grip, we mix an anti-slip aggregate into the final coat, which many Green Bay customers choose for winter.
How much do flakes add to the cost?
HomeGuide lists decorative flakes, custom colors or patterns at $0.50 to $2.00 per square foot on top of the base coating price. A full broadcast uses more flake than a light scatter.
Do flake floors hide dirt and salt?
Yes, that is their main benefit. A multi-color blend hides dust, sand and dried salt far better than a solid color, so the floor looks clean longer between rinses.
Can a flake floor go in a basement?
Yes, if the slab passes a moisture check. Where moisture is present, we use a primer rated for it first or tell you if a water problem needs fixing before any coating.
Polyaspartic Floor Coatings Questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?
Each has strengths. Polyaspartic cures faster, resists UV and handles a wider temperature range. Epoxy builds more thickness per coat and costs less. Many garages get both, with epoxy as the base and polyaspartic on top.
Can polyaspartic be installed in a cold garage?
Its application range is much wider than epoxy's, with HomeGuide listing about -30°F to 140°F. We still check the slab and product data on the day, since each product has its own limits.
How soon can I drive on a polyaspartic floor?
Bob Vila's guide says vehicles can usually go on after about 24 hours. We give you a specific time based on the product and temperature.
Why not DIY a polyaspartic kit?
It sets quickly and has a short working time, so mistakes harden in place. HomeGuide rates it as not DIY-friendly. Prep, which kits usually skip, still decides how long it lasts.
Basement Floor Epoxy Questions
Can you epoxy a damp basement floor?
It depends on the moisture reading. Moderate moisture can be handled with a primer made for it. Active water, such as a leaking crack, has to be fixed first or the coating will fail.
How much does basement floor epoxy cost?
HomeGuide lists $1,200 to $20,000 for basements between 300 and 2,000 square feet, based on $4 to $10 per square foot. Old paint removal and moisture treatment add to the total.
Does epoxy stop radon?
No. A coating can seal some cracks, but it is not a radon system. Wisconsin DHS says about 1 in 10 homes in the state has high radon, so test before finishing a basement.
Is epoxy good for a finished basement?
It works well in rec rooms, gyms and bars, especially with a metallic or flake finish. Add rugs where you want warmth underfoot, since a coated slab stays as cool as the concrete.
Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions
How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost?
This Old House and Bob Vila both list metallic epoxy at about $5 to $12 per square foot. Design complexity, slab repair and the topcoat you choose set the final number.
Is metallic epoxy good for a garage?
It can be, especially in a show or hobby garage. In a daily-use garage that takes salt and slush, a flake floor hides wear better and gives more grip.
Will a metallic floor turn yellow?
Epoxy can amber in direct sunlight. We finish metallic floors near windows or doors with a UV-stable topcoat to protect the color.
Can I choose the exact pattern?
You choose the colors, the base and how much movement you want, and we can show you test boards. The final pattern forms as the material flows, so every floor is a little different.
Shop & Commercial Floor Epoxy Questions
How much does commercial floor epoxy cost?
HomeAdvisor lists commercial and industrial 100% solids epoxy at $12 or more per square foot, with high-traffic coatings adding 20% to 30%. Prep and downtime limits are the biggest variables.
Can you coat a shop floor without shutting us down?
Often, yes. We phase the work by area and use faster-curing topcoats where needed. We plan it with you before we start.
How long will a commercial epoxy floor last?
It depends on the build, the traffic and the upkeep. HomeGuide gives solid epoxy systems a 10 to 20 year lifespan, but a coating too thin for forklift or truck traffic wears out much sooner, so we size thickness and topcoat to the use.
Will epoxy hold up to forklifts?
A properly built 100% solids system bonded to ground concrete handles forklift traffic well. Thin, paint-grade coatings do not, and they are a common source of early failures.
