A Coating That Works With a Short Season
Polyaspartic floor coatings are a newer family of resin from the polyurea group. They cure much faster than epoxy, stay flexible, and resist yellowing in sunlight. In Green Bay, the big draw is temperature. HomeGuide lists polyaspartic as applicable from about -30°F to 140°F, while it gives epoxy a window of 60°F to 85°F. With January highs averaging about 25.5°F here, that difference decides whether a cold garage can be coated outside of summer.
Fast cure, short downtime
HomeGuide puts the full cure for polyaspartic at 1 to 2 days and for epoxy at up to a week. Bob Vila's guide says polyaspartic can take foot traffic after a few hours and vehicles after about 24 hours, while epoxy usually needs about three days before parking. If you only have one garage and nowhere else to put the car, that matters.
Where we use it
- As a topcoat over epoxy: an epoxy base builds thickness, and the polyaspartic top adds UV resistance and scratch resistance. This is our most common garage system.
- As a full system: primer, base and topcoat all polyaspartic, for the fastest return to service.
- On floors that get sun: garages with the door open on summer afternoons, sunrooms and entries, where standard epoxy can yellow.
- On cold-season jobs: when a slab cannot be warmed enough for epoxy to cure well.
Trade-offs to know
Polyaspartic goes on thin, about 2 to 6 mils per coat per HomeGuide, against 10 to 20 mils for epoxy. It also sets quickly, which leaves little working time and makes it a poor DIY product. It costs more per square foot. It still needs the same diamond-ground surface and dry slab as any other coating. A fast product over a bad slab fails just as fast.
Moisture still matters
Fast cure does not fix moisture. Basement and slab-on-grade floors in Brown County sit over clay-heavy soils. The USDA describes the Kewaunee series, widespread in eastern Wisconsin, as having a silty clay or clay subsoil with slow permeability. Ground like that can keep moisture near a slab. We take a reading first, and Bob Vila's guide notes a moisture barrier can add around $1 per square foot when one is needed.
How we apply it
Because polyaspartic sets fast, we mix it in smaller batches and work the floor in sections. The crew size and sequence are planned before we arrive so each section is rolled and finished while the material is still workable. That is also why we do not sell it as a kit or leave it for a homeowner to finish.
Is it right for your floor?
If you want to park within a day, have a garage that gets afternoon sun, or need work done outside the warm months, polyaspartic is usually worth the higher price. If the floor is in a basement with no sunlight and time is not tight, an epoxy system may give you more thickness for the money. We walk through both at the estimate.
What This Covers
Polyaspartic work starts with the same full prep as every other system we install.
Grinding and repair
Diamond-ground slab with cracks, joints and spalls filled.
Polyaspartic topcoat over epoxy
Epoxy for build, polyaspartic for UV and abrasion resistance.
Full polyaspartic system
Primer to topcoat in one fast-curing chemistry for the shortest downtime.
Flake or solid color
Works with full-flake broadcasts, partial flake or solid tinted finishes.

How It Works
1. Check slab and temperature
We take a moisture reading and slab temperature to choose the right system.
2. Grind and repair
Full diamond grind, crack and spall repair, and vacuuming.
3. Apply in tight stages
Polyaspartic sets fast, so coats go down in small, controlled sections.
4. Return to use
Usually foot traffic in hours and vehicles the next day; we confirm for your floor.

Polyaspartic Floor Coatings Questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?
Each has strengths. Polyaspartic cures faster, resists UV and handles a wider temperature range. Epoxy builds more thickness per coat and costs less. Many garages get both, with epoxy as the base and polyaspartic on top.
Can polyaspartic be installed in a cold garage?
Its application range is much wider than epoxy's, with HomeGuide listing about -30°F to 140°F. We still check the slab and product data on the day, since each product has its own limits.
How soon can I drive on a polyaspartic floor?
Bob Vila's guide says vehicles can usually go on after about 24 hours. We give you a specific time based on the product and temperature.
Why not DIY a polyaspartic kit?
It sets quickly and has a short working time, so mistakes harden in place. HomeGuide rates it as not DIY-friendly. Prep, which kits usually skip, still decides how long it lasts.
