What Metallic Epoxy Looks Like
Metallic epoxy floors use a clear epoxy mixed with metallic pigments. Poured over a dark base and worked with rollers, trowels and sometimes solvent sprays, the pigment moves into swirls, ripples and cell patterns. The look ranges from polished stone to marble to something like a river seen from above. Each floor is unique, because it depends on how the material flows on your slab.
Where it fits
In Green Bay homes, metallic floors go mostly where people spend time and want something better than plain concrete:
- Finished basements and rec rooms
- Home bars and game rooms, including Packers rooms
- Home gyms
- Garages used as a hobby space or for a prized car
Commercial spaces such as retail floors, salons and offices use it too.
Things to know before you choose it
- It shows more than flake. A smooth gloss finish shows dust, scratches and footprints sooner than a textured flake floor. In a working garage with winter salt, flake is usually more practical.
- It can be slick. A fine anti-slip additive in the topcoat helps, but a metallic floor will always be smoother than a broadcast floor.
- It needs UV protection where sun hits it. Epoxy can amber in sunlight, so we finish with a UV-stable topcoat on any floor near windows or an open door.
- Results vary by design. We show you samples and photos of the color combination, and talk through how much movement you want.
Prep is the same as any floor
A metallic finish exaggerates whatever is under it. Cracks, ridges and patches can show through as lines in the pattern. We grind the slab, fill and smooth cracks and pits, and prime it before the color goes down. In basements we test moisture first, because a blister in a metallic floor is easy to spot.
Colors
Popular choices include silver over charcoal, copper and bronze tones, deep blues and grays, and two-tone blends. Green and gold is an option if you want the room to match game day. Darker bases make the metallic swirl stand out more. We mix test boards so you can see the combination before we pour.
Metallic in a garage or shop
Some Green Bay owners want a metallic finish in a heated garage that holds a collector car or doubles as a hangout space. It can work there. We add a stronger topcoat for hot tires, suggest a light anti-slip grit near the door, and talk honestly about how salt and slush will show on a glossy floor. If the garage is a daily driver bay all winter, we usually steer you toward flake.
Care
Sweep or dust-mop often, wipe spills soon and use mats at entries. Felt pads under furniture keep scratches down. The clear topcoat is the wear layer and can be recoated after years of use without redoing the color.
What This Covers
A metallic floor is a multi-coat system built on a carefully smoothed slab.
Grinding and smoothing
The slab is ground flat and every crack and pit filled so lines do not telegraph through.
Primer and dark base coat
Seals the concrete and gives the metallic layer depth.
Metallic pour
Pigmented clear epoxy worked by hand into the pattern you choose.
UV-stable clear topcoat
Protects the color, adds scratch resistance and can carry fine anti-slip grit.

How It Works
1. Design
We look at samples and test boards together and pick colors and how much movement you want.
2. Prep
Grind, fill and smooth the slab, then prime it; basements get a moisture test first.
3. Pour
The base coat, then the metallic layer, worked by hand while it flows.
4. Topcoat and cure
A clear UV-stable topcoat, then a cure period before furniture goes back.

Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions
How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost?
This Old House and Bob Vila both list metallic epoxy at about $5 to $12 per square foot. Design complexity, slab repair and the topcoat you choose set the final number.
Is metallic epoxy good for a garage?
It can be, especially in a show or hobby garage. In a daily-use garage that takes salt and slush, a flake floor hides wear better and gives more grip.
Will a metallic floor turn yellow?
Epoxy can amber in direct sunlight. We finish metallic floors near windows or doors with a UV-stable topcoat to protect the color.
Can I choose the exact pattern?
You choose the colors, the base and how much movement you want, and we can show you test boards. The final pattern forms as the material flows, so every floor is a little different.
