What Winter Does to a Garage Floor
Garage floor epoxy is the coating most Green Bay homeowners ask us about, and the reason shows up every November. With about 55.6 inches of snow a year, local roads stay salted for months. Each time you pull in, slush drips off the wheel wells, melts, and soaks into bare concrete. A coated garage floor seals the slab so the brine sits on top where a squeegee can move it.
How bare concrete breaks down
Concrete has tiny pores. Salty water works into them, and when the garage swings above and below freezing, that water freezes, expands and thaws again. Over a few winters the top layer weakens and flakes off. The worst damage usually sits in the first few feet inside the door and under the tires, where meltwater collects and the temperature changes most. Oil and antifreeze drips add stains that soak in and keep a coating from bonding later.
Signs your floor is ready for a coating
- Flaking or scaling near the door or along the tire paths
- White crust or rings where puddles have dried
- Oil spots that never fully come out
- Dust that comes back days after sweeping
- A store-kit coating peeling where hot tires sit
- Cracks, broken control joints or a low spot that holds water
Prep is the job
Most DIY kits rely on acid etching. Etching cleans the surface but leaves weak, salt-damaged concrete and old sealers in place, and hot tires can then pull a thin film right off. We diamond grind the full slab, including the edges along the walls, then vacuum the dust. Cracks and spalls get filled, oil spots get degreased, and any old paint or kit coating comes off first. Only then does the base coat go down.
A slab from 1955 versus one from 2005
Green Bay's median home was built in 1971, per ACS figures summarized by Point2Homes, and more than a third of homes predate 1960. Older garages, often detached, tend to have thinner concrete, more cracks and floors that slope or hold water. Newer attached garages, common in fast-growing places like Suamico and Lawrence, are usually flatter but still take a full salt season every year. We look at what you have and plan the grind, repairs and system around it.
The finish
Most garage floors here get a flake broadcast, which hides salt residue between cleanings and adds grip. A solid color with an anti-slip additive works if you want a cleaner look. Either way, a clear polyaspartic or urethane topcoat goes on last for scratch and chemical resistance. We bring samples so you can see them in your own garage light.
Living with it through the winter
A coating makes winter cleanup much easier. It still needs some care. Squeegee meltwater out the door, rinse the floor every few weeks during salt season, and put a containment mat under each vehicle if you like. Use a plastic shovel edge on the coated surface, not steel.
What This Covers
A garage coating covers the whole slab, from the door seal to the back wall.
Full-slab diamond grinding
Opens the surface, removes salt-weakened concrete and takes off old sealers and paint.
Crack, joint and spall repair
Fills damage so the finished floor is continuous and water has fewer places to get under it.
Base coat and finish layer
A 100% solids epoxy base with flake or solid color on top.
Clear protective topcoat
A polyaspartic or urethane layer that resists abrasion, chemicals and sunlight through the door.
Stem walls and steps
Coating can carry up the short concrete curb at the walls and onto entry steps if you want it.

How It Works
1. Inspect and measure
We measure the floor, take a moisture reading and note cracks, scaling, oil and old coatings.
2. Grind and repair
The slab is diamond ground and vacuumed, and every crack and spall is filled.
3. Coat
Base coat, flake or color, and topcoat, done in one or two days depending on the system.
4. Cure and hand back
We give you times for walking, moving things back and parking, based on the product and the temperature.

Garage Floor Epoxy Questions
How much does garage floor epoxy cost in Green Bay?
HomeGuide's national range for a two-car garage is about $1,600 to $5,800 for epoxy. Salt scaling, an old coating to strip and the finish you pick all change where your floor lands. We give you a written number after we see it.
How long before I can park on a new epoxy garage floor?
Bob Vila's coating guide says standard epoxy usually needs about three days before vehicles, while polyaspartic can take cars after about 24 hours. Cold weather slows curing, so we give you a specific time for your floor.
Why did my DIY garage epoxy peel?
Usually the prep. Kits depend on acid etching, which leaves weak or salt-contaminated concrete and old sealers in place. Hot tires then lift the thin coating. A ground surface and a thicker system bond far better.
Is garage floor epoxy worth it in Wisconsin?
For a garage that takes road salt every winter, a bonded coating protects the concrete and makes cleanup simple. It is not worth doing over a slab with active water or heaving, and we tell you if that is what we find.
Can you coat a detached garage with no heat?
Yes, in the right season, or with temporary heat in colder months. Epoxy needs a warm slab to cure, so for unheated garages we often schedule late spring through early fall or use a polyaspartic topcoat.
