A Fishing Town's Garage Floor
Epoxy flooring in Algoma has to deal with things most garages never see: fish slime, bait, bilge water and wet waders. Algoma sits on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Ahnapee River, about 30 miles east of Green Bay, and sport fishing is one of its biggest draws. In 1897, when the state legislature renamed the city Algoma, its commercial fishing fleet was the largest on Lake Michigan. Plenty of local garages still serve as a boat bay and gear room.
What fishing does to bare concrete
Raw concrete is porous. Water from a rinsed boat, fish oil and cleaning chemicals soak in. The result is stains, odors that linger and a floor that never quite looks clean. Add winter salt off WIS 42 and WIS 54, and the slab wears quickly near the door. A sealed floor lets you hose everything toward the drain or out the door.
Floors we recommend in Algoma
For boat and gear garages: Shop & Commercial Floor Epoxy, built thicker with a chemical-resistant topcoat. It handles fuel, oil and cleaners.
For a fish-cleaning corner: a full-flake system with an anti-slip additive. Wet, slimy floors are slick, and texture matters here.
For everyday garages: Garage Floor Epoxy or Polyaspartic Floor Coatings, which seal out salt brine and clean up fast.
For finished lower levels: Basement Floor Epoxy or Metallic Epoxy Floors, after a moisture test.
An older city with older slabs
Ahnapee incorporated as a city on February 23, 1879, and the Ahnapee and Western Railway arrived in 1892. The town even survived the 1871 Peshtigo Fire when heavy rain put it out first. That long history shows in the housing. Many Algoma homes have older basements and garages with thin, patched or painted concrete. We grind off old coatings and fill cracks and spalls before anything goes down. If a slab has heaved or is breaking apart, we tell you before you spend money on a coating.
Second homes and rentals
In 2010, the census counted 1,702 housing units in Algoma but only 1,406 households, a gap of 296 homes with no one living in them full time. If you own a cottage or a rental here, a coated garage or basement is easy to clean between stays and holds up to guests tracking in sand from Crescent Beach. We can schedule the work while the place is empty.
Timing around summer events
Algoma's summer is busy, with Shanty Days on the second weekend of August and the Soar on the Shore kite festival on the third full weekend. If you want the garage ready for visitors or a boat launch date, call early. We plan install days around temperature and humidity, and lakeshore humidity can stretch cure times.
Cleaning and care
A coated floor in a fishing garage stays good-looking with simple care. Hose it down after cleaning fish or rinsing gear. Push winter slush out before it dries into salt rings. Use a mild cleaner and a soft mop or deck brush. Skip acid-based cleaners and harsh solvents, which can dull the topcoat over time. Put a mat or plywood under trailer jacks so a narrow foot does not dig in.

Algoma Questions
Can I clean fish on an epoxy floor?
Yes. A sealed floor is far easier to clean than bare concrete. We suggest a flake system with an anti-slip additive in that area, since wet floors get slick. Rinse it after each use so oils do not sit.
Will boat fuel or bilge water damage the coating?
A shop-grade epoxy with a chemical-resistant topcoat handles occasional fuel and oil drips well. Wipe spills up when you see them instead of letting them sit for days.
Can you coat my rental or cottage garage while I am away?
Yes. We can schedule the work while the property is empty, as long as we have access and the space is cleared. We send you the cure times so you know when it is ready for guests.
